Stuck in Paris – The Tenacious Travelers

Location: Paris, France, Europe

May 8, 2006

We have been in Paris for about ten days now and it has been awesome, what a great city to party in. The city is all about drinking, bottles of wine for about $1.50 Canadian, you can drink any ware; we have spent a few nights at the park beside the Eiffel Tower drinking bottles of wine. It’s not a problem only speaking English, most people here seem to speak a bit and you pick up what you need to. The People here for the most part is quite nice and will help you out, there are exceptions though of course and you get that famous French attitude.

The Eiffel tower is cool, a lot bigger than I thought it was, and much better at night (you can compare the pictures) than in the day time, it puts a light show on at night for about 10 minutes. The Arch de Triumph and the walk from it to the Louvre is something to see quite a beautiful sight to stand at the end and look back. The Arch is huge and just standing watching the traffic that goes around it is great, picture a six lane round a bought with 13 roads feeding into it and a minor accident every eight seconds. There is a three-thousand-year-old obelisk from Egypt that stands in a round a bought further down and then and then another arch and then fountains all in a straight line, so the view is quite spectacular.

We went to the Louvre and saw thousands of works of art such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, the Louvre itself used to be a palace so it is huge and it’s beautiful inside without the art. We spent four hours there and saw the main works but there is so much to see we could spend days there, there is mummies from Egypt, paintings from Italy, and statues from Greece just to mention a few. It gives you a feeling of awe to walk but such masterpieces, one thing we were wondering about is why are the famous works so famous, for example why is the Mona Lisa so famous when there are other works that are just as if not more beautiful.

We have spent a lot of time in parks with cheap bottles of wine just lounging around not particularly doing anything. It has been great weather, sunny and warm, a welcome change then that of the UK. It’s great to go to the store grab a bottle of wine a baguette some cheese and head to the park for lunch and a nap in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, a great life, wouldn’t mind being able to do that more. The food here is amazing, great cheese and deserts and it’s not all that expensive from little bakeries, I’m pretty much living on fresh baguette sandwiches

Notre Dame was cool, a huge place with beautiful architecture and sculptures all over the place. The outside of the building was just as amazing as the inside with tons of arches and statues and the stain glass was amazing. We went to the cemetery where Jim Morrison, Chopin, and Oscar Wilde are buried in. There are some amazing graves there with them ranging from simple grave stones to big domed mausoleums, and the place is huge, tons and tons of graves. The Oscar Wilde grave was cool, it’s hard to tell in the picture but all those spots are lip stick marks from girls kissing it.

We are going to be leaving Paris tomorrow and heading off to see some of the other cities in France, I think we will be going to see the Normandy beaches and then to the south of France before we head to Spain.
