The weekend was a bitter sweet one to say the least. It was Mel’s farewell to the Wa and the people it contains.
Saturday night was spent in Mel, Linda and H’s house dinning on local cuisine and reminiscing about Mel’s time spent here. Most of the volunteers from the Upper West were here and a few of Mel’s close Ghanaian friends. It was a very nice evening of chatting and trying not to think about people leaving.
Sunday, I joined the two Mels and my colleague Peter for his home brewed Pito at his place. It was as it always is, peaceful and pleasant, I really could spend many an afternoon under the tree next to his house sipping on pito and chatting about nothing.
Sunday night we all gathered once more at Mel’s house and dined on small pizzas made from Mel’s left over much cherished cheese (You can buy it in Accra). There was TZ which is a local food and some other dishes. As a special request for Mel we watched Australia, long film but it wasn’t too bad.
I watched as Mel had to say goodbye to all the people here for the last time. It was hard to watch, and I thought about what it must be like. Relationships are very intense here as we only have each other and because we are from many corners of the globe you never know when you will see each other again. These are the people who we turn to in good times and bad, our shoulders to cry on, someone who you can talk to and be completely in the same mindset.
I think we prepare ourselves to say goodbye to the people back home because we know we will see them again. I don’t think we really prepare to say goodbye to people here. I’m not sure what I’ll feel when I go through that, I’m not looking forward to it.
