Here I Jo – The Tenacious Travelers

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa, Africa

April 5, 2011

I have visited Johannesburg a very time now but never the city, so it was time to rectifiy that. Kelly was going to take a test for school, so I thought I would tag along.

It’s easy to get from Maputo to Jo’burg, just an overnight bus where you awake to find yourself at around 5:00 in a bus station where all the guide books and people you talk to warn you to get out of ASAP. But a taxi was easy to obtain, and we were whisked away to the double fenced safety of the hostel.

We were only spending a couple days in Jo’burg and the first day passed by quick quickly because we went to a Mall, and they have malls that would make North America proud. Book stores with English books and meals that brought back memories of what felt like another life quickly sucked us in and the day ended sooner than expected because we were all tiered from the overnight bus ride.

The next day we grasped though and headed off on the local mini-buses to the Apartheid museum. An excellent museum with a lot of information, I was only able to get through the preamble on Nelson Mandela before the museum closed and it was time to go, five hours flew by, I will have to go back to finish it one day. We chose a place to sit and have a nice meal in the evening. The next day was Kelly’s exam, so we went to the Mall which house the office building and Aubrey and I headed off to amuse ourselves in the mall for a few hours. Not a hard task seeing as there was lots to play with and book stores where we could hole up and read to our hearts content. After Kelly had finished we headed off to have a nice meal before catching the night bus back to Maputo.

And that was it, a quick trip to the “hub” of the south, an interesting city and I’m sure there is a lot more to explore. I would like to go to the township nearby.
