Denmarks the Spot – The Tenacious Travelers

Location: Copenhagen, Denmark, Europe

July 3, 2006

From the time I have spent among the Danes I have learned a couple things, one they are a little strange, two they are extremely proud that Hans Christian Andersen came from their country, and thirdly they came from a Viking race.

The first one is observed from the fact that their ads for different products contain the weirdest subjects, such as a girl peeing for a clothing store. And from the statues that inhabit their cities, the strangest of subjects and styles. Also as a sign of rebellion they steal the head of the famous little mermaid statue about once a year, that’s just a little different.

The second is easy to observe since many streets, buildings, and statues bear his name and everywhere you look seems to be some play or performance based on his work. I was in Tivoli tonight which is like a permanent amusement park and of course the Performance there was all to do with his fairytales.

There was a four-day music festival here in Denmark, not unlike the one Jeff and I attended in Belgium, slightly bigger. From all the reports I am hearing from this festival you wouldn’t question where the Danes heritage lies. They piss everywhere, so much so people from the festival are getting sick with dysentery. They are constantly drinking and eating large chunks of meat. And on the forth night of the festival they celebrate the end by burning all the tents that they have been camping in, go Vikings.

I am leaving Copenhagen tomorrow and seeing Odense on the way to Lego land. I am going to Camp outside Lego land, which should be a lot of fun. After that I will be going up North to a couple other cities Aalborg and Aarhus before catching a ferry to Norway.

I have enjoyed Copenhagen, a nice city, and not all that much to do here though and very quiet, I have never seen a major city so dead at 2am on a Friday night. It is a pretty city though with a lot nice parks, a lot of swans and some unique areas such as the waterfront area with colourful buildings and the little mermaid statues and the Christiana area which is a dying hippie settlement that the city is slowly shutting down because of drugs and the free rent.
