I went to Bolgatanga for a workshop to do with some Organisational Development work we are doing. Sitting around in room with 10 other people discussing the best ways to word a tool that we will be using to help come up with an accurate picture of our Organisation is not always the most interesting way to spend a day. It was a productive day though and I am sure it will help me with my work. We are trying to do this so the organizations not on what to focus and where their strengths and weaknesses are. This helps with getting funding and leads to internal review which can really help in a culture where a lot of things are done a certain way because that’s the way it was always done and for no other reasons.
Bolgatanga is a larger city then Wa; it is the capital of the Upper East Region of Ghana. It has a lot more services and you can get a lot of products that I cannot find in Wa. There are more western influences, products and shops and restaurants and the like. They have shared taxis which are something we don’t, and I wish we did. Basically, it’s a taxi that is driving a set route, usually from the center of town along a main road to a certain area. You pay a fraction of the price of the price of hiring the taxi yourself (called a drop taxi). But you cannot go anywhere other than the route. These are how a lot of the local people travel as it is cheap and effective and most areas, or close to, are covered by this unofficial network. It would be great to have this in our town.
I stayed with Rachael in Bolga; she is a Teacher from Scotland and has a very nice house a short taxi ride from the center. She even has a night watchman to watch the compound the house is in. It’s a similar setup to my house but it is much more a city house, the area around the house is cleared of grass and is just gravel, unlike my house which is just grass. Olke a Dutch woman lives across the road, her house is very similar to Rachael’s. They both have polytanks and seem to have running water the whole time, I even got a proper shower again, very nice.
I had a very nice out at the local Spot (in Ghana bars are called Spots) with a good number of the volunteers that came over with me. It was great to catch up and see how their experience has been and how they are dealing with work. Work for some is going very well, they feel like they are getting a lot done, others are moving slowly and waiting for things to pick up. Antony, a science teacher from England, is already going to many of the schools in the area and has held workshops already. He has an accompanying partner (VSO jargon for a no volunteer partner) Laura, who is a vet. There are not very many vets in Ghana, so she is very much in demand.
Two of the Volunteers that have been here for a few months were on their way to Timbuktu in Mali; a lot of people tend to do this trip since it’s not far from where we are. They are going up through Burkina Faso and I think I will tag along to the capital and then come back to Ghana.
