I made it from Sweden to Finland with out to much trouble, wrong ferry times and having to wait around but that it. I went north in Finland first then back south to Helsinki which is where I am now.
So, I crossed the Arctic Circle, wasn’t really that big of a deal but I kind of wanted to do it. I also found Santa while I was up there. He has a little village up there and I think he funds his Christmas habit by selling crap to tourist and building log houses. He also has an amusement park which is open year-round if you want to go.
I thought the days where long when we were in the Netherlands and Belgium but it’s even longer in the Scandinavian countries. When it looks like 4pm at 10pm it really throws you of. I experienced the midnight sun, days with no real darkness at all. In Norway we were on a beach at midnight and people where still surfing because they could still see.
Helsinki is a nice city, nothing special though. It has an interesting mix of Swedish and Russian styles because they both controlled the country at one time. There is a nice water front, with a lot of ships coming in from across the Baltic. Tomorrow I think I’m going to an island fortress that the Swedish built. The day after that I am of to St Petersburg though, only five hours away by train. I’d hate to add up the time I have spent on trains.
